Joseph Scammell - An Ordinary Man

Previous | Next | Contents

Introduction

Joseph Scammell was my great great great grandfather and he was an ordinary man. He was baptised a Catholic and buried by the Church of England. He married three times and fathered thirteen children, eleven of whom survived infancy. He spent his adult life as a baker in a Wiltshire village.

This ordinary man was born in the little village of Ansty, Wiltshire in 1790. It was a cool, showery day with a westerly wind. Ansty is about 3 miles south of the town of Tisbury, Wiltshire. The Scammell name has been found in this area since the 14th century and is locally common.

Joseph was baptised at All Saints Roman Catholic Chapel, New Wardour Castle.

Other sources give later dates for Joseph’s birth. A Family Bible records it as 17th August 1793 and the age shown on both his death certificate and gravestone suggest he was born in 1792. In the 1851 census his age was given as 56, giving a birth year of 1795. Inconsistencies in birth date are fairly common at this time and it may be that neither Joseph nor his family knew exactly when he was born.

This section of the website tells Joseph’s stories. I have full dates, references and other information which I will be happy to share with genuine researchers who are directly descended from this branch of the Scammell family.
