Family of Henry Orchin 1789-1845

Henry ORCHIN was born around the early 1790s. He was married to Elizabeth Smith by Banns at St George Hanover Square, Westminster, Middlesex in 1810 and the first seven of their twelve children were baptised in the same area. Elizabeth Smith was born about 1787 in Blackfriars, London.

The registers of baptism show that the family moved frequently, within Middlesex, then to Surrey and back before settling in Kent. The family are found on the 1841 census for Mote Park, Maidstone, which lists Henry's occupation as coachman. This occupation lends a reasonable explanation for the frequent moves - Henry would have moved with his employers. Mote Park was the seat of Lord Romney (the Marshams)

After Henry died in 1845 at Mote Park, Elizabeth Orchin (nee Smith) lived with her daughter Emma's (Burridge) family in Ham, Surrey. In 1851, aged 63, she worked as a laundress. By 1881 she was living in Richmond with another daughter (Mary Ann Langridge) and, in failing health, she was admitted to the Richmond Union Workhouse in June 1883. She died in 1883 aged 97.

Henry Orchin or Alchin?

There is isn't an entry for Henry ORCHIN in any of the available indexes for baptisms in England around 1790. I have made a general search for his baptism in Middlesex parishes around the area where he was married. There is no evidence of Orchin baptisms, marriages or deaths in this area. A possible baptism was found with the ALCHIN surname - a Henry ALCHIN was baptised on in 1789, the son of Henry ALCHIN and Mary at St George Hanover Square.

There is some weak documentary evidence that Henry Orchin may have been born with the surname ALCHIN. His death certificate bears the ALCHIN surname, but it was crossed out and replaced with surname ORCHIN. It is quite likely that the Henry ALCHIN baptism of 1789 is for the person later known as Henry ORCHIN. More research is required to establish this as fact. Please email me if you can help.
