The Norman and Marshall Families - Paupers and Peasants
Ann Marshall nee Vallis
Ann Vallis is also hard to trace. She was the mother of Elizabeth Marshall nee Marshall. Ann was probably the daughter of Robert Vallis and Mary Vallis (née Herrington) who married in Kilmington in 1780. Ann was baptised in 1783. She had a sister Betty and brothers Thomas, Samuel and Robert.
Her mother's baptism has not been found but her father was baptised in 1755, son of Samuel Vallis and Anna Vallis (née Marshall) who married in the parish in 1755. Neither can be traced back. However the Vallis name is said to be local to the Frome area of Somerset. It is said that all bearers of the name can be traced back a single family in the town who in turn were descendants of the De Valois family from the Il de France.
.Ann was a widowed pauper living with her daughter Elizabeth (William's mother) in 1851. She was buried in Kingston Deverill on in 1864 aged 81.
