Elizabeth Marshall

Elizabeth Marshall was wife of Luke and mother to William. She was my great great great grandmother. She was baptised in Kingston Deverill on 31 Dec 1815, daughter of John Marshall and his wife Ann Marshall (née Vallis).

Luke Marshall, William's father, had died of TB in 1845. In 1848 Elizabeth baptised an illegitimate daughter, Marina, father unknown.

In 1851 Elizabeth was a 30 year old charwoman living in Kingston Deverill. Her three sons, James, William and John were all living at home, as was 3 year old Marina. Also with the family was Ann Marshall, Elizabeth's mother (a widowed pauper aged 70), Elizabeth's nephew William an ag lab aged 22 and her 14 year old niece Louisa who earned her keep as a silk spinner.

In 1861 James had left home. John and William were both farm labourers. Marina, now 12, was a silk thrower along with her young aunt, Louisa. Elizabeth was a pauper.

On 19 Oct 1865 Elizabeth remarried. Her husband was widower James Carpenter who was 48 and the son of Samuel Carpenter. Elizabeth, aged 50, gave her status as widow and her father as John Marshall. The couple remained in the village in 1871 and 1881. Elizabeth's sister Hannah had married a Samuel Carpenter, possibly a brother to James, in 1843.

Elizabeth died in 1890. James cannot be found in the 1891 census.

Marina(Elizabeth's illegitimate daughter) married James Atkins in 1867 in Bruton, Somerset. James was a road contractor. The couple had 11 children:Jane, Rosina Maria, William James, Albert, Ellen, James, Raymond, Edmund John, Harry and twins, Percy and Reginald. Marina died giving birth to these twins.
