The Norman and Marshall Families - Paupers and Peasants
The Family of Luke and Elizabeth Marshall
The Marshall family came from the poor chalkland village of Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire. It is now a desirable village but the living was very poor in the 17th and 18th century as the land was of poor agricultural quality. There was also a 'squatters' camp' between Kingston Deverill and Warminster which may have been home to some of our ancestors!
William's parents were Luke and Elizabeth Marshall (née Marshall), my great great great grandparents. They do not seem to be related and were married in Kingston Deverill in1834. Their children were as follows, all baptised in Kingston Deverill:
- William: 1834
Buried 1834 - James: 1837
Married Elizabeth Trimby 1859 - William: 1840
Married Caroline Jane Edwards 1860 - John: 1843
Married Eliza Ann Hoskins 1875
In 1841 the family of Luke, Elizabeth, James and William are found in Kingston Deverill. Luke, aged 30, is an ag lab.
James married Elizabeth Trimby in 1859, daughter of Adam Trimby a silk spinner. In 1861 the pair were living in the village and James was an ag.lab. They were living in Baverstock, Wilts in 1881 and James was a carter. John Trimby, aged 17, from Kingston Deverill lodged with them, and 10 year old Elizabeth White, also from Kingston Deverill, was visiting. Albert Marshall, William's son, had also worked in Baverstock. By 1891 they had moved to Barford St Martin and James was a Carter. This time their lodgers were Arthur Trimby, a nephew and Sarah Jane Bailey,a niece. James was dead by 1901. Elizabeth remained in Barford St Martin accompanied by Eliza Hazard, another niece who was born in Barford St Martin. They lived next door to the Dragon Public House and Brewery.
John was also a carter and he married Eliza Ann Hoskins in 1875. She was from Castle Cary. They had a daughter, Frances who was born in Kingston Deverill circa 1877. In 1881 the family were living in Upton Lovell, Wiltshire. Nothing more is known of the family; they are not found in either the 1891 or the 1901 census.
