The Norman and Marshall Families - Paupers and Peasants
William Marshall
William Marshall, my great great grandfather was an agricultural labourer and shepherd when he married (Caroline) Jane Edwards in 1862. He had been baptised at Kingston Deverill, Wiltshire in 1840. His birth was not registered.
In 1861 he was still living at home in Kingston Deverill with his widowed mother, Elizabeth ,along with his maternal grandmother Ann, cousin Louisa, brother John and sister Maria. The family were extremely poor. William and John were Ag labs; Elizabeth and Ann were paupers; Maria and Louisa were silk throwers.
In 1871 William, Jane and daughters Emily and Rosina were living on the edge of village at Barford St Martin, William was an ag lab. Son Albert was living in Kilmington with Jane's parents. It is not known why he had moved there but it was probably for work purposes. His brother James lived their later. The family had returned to Kilmington by 1881, living in Meadow Lane. Eliza and John were new additions to the family but Emily and Albert were out in service. Jane, Emily's mother must have died soon after because by 1891 William was a widower living in Norton Ferris, near Kilmington. William and John were both agricultural labourers and Margaret was acting as their housekeeper.
William then moved to Kinson near Bournemouth and was a road sweeper at one time. In 1901 he was a general labourer, living in Gwynne Road, Branksome with Rosina (enumerated as Margaret as in 1891). Emily's daughter Florence V Norman was staying with them.
