The Norman and Marshall Families - Paupers and Peasants
William Norman
William Norman, son of George, was baptised at Bratton Seymour on in 1838. George was a farm labourer. William was my great grandfather.
He married Emily Eliza Marshall at Kilmington, Wiltshire in 1889. The couple lived in the hamlet of Norton Ferris, on the outskirts of Maiden Bradley, Wilthsire (close to Kilmington) before moving to Castle Cary, Somerset, in the late 1890s. The couple had 5 children:
- Elsie Edith: 1890 Norton Ferris
- Herbert Maurice: Born 1896. Known as Bertie
Married Hilda Cull - Florence Victoria: 1897 Castle Cary. Known as Floss
Married Percy Dowling - Harold George: 1901 Castle Cary (twin). Died as a child.
- Estcourt William: 1901 Castle Cary (twin) Known as Billy.
Married Phyllis Mary Elizabeth Scammell
In 1901 the family were living at 1 Abbey Cottages, Castle Cary and William was working as a domestic groom.
Little is known about the family. Emily died in 1911 and was buried in Castle Cary Cemetery on 10 July 1911. William then married her sister, Rosina Marshall and the couple had a daughter, Kathleen. William spent his working life as a groom. However William's granddaughter Mary Norman shared her memories of him.
This is what I know of their children:
Elsie did not marry and remained in service all her life.
Florence married Percy Dowling, They had one daughter, Eileen. Mary James last remembers seeing Floss on her way to the Pub on VE Night. Shortly after that she died from throat cancer.
Herbert went to Grammar School in Bruton. He married Hilda Cull. The couple had no children but raised Hilda's nieces Molly and Marie after their mother died in childbirth.
After Emily's death in 1911, William re-married to her sister Rosina and they had one daughter Kathleen.
